Zipf's Law
Simply stated, Zipf's law says that a language will contain a relatively smaller number of very common words and a relatively larger number of less common words. We don't need to know every word of a language to understand a lot of it. You can understand a large chunk (perhaps 50%) of English literature with only 130-150 words.
